Come explore the magic of Valletta, Malta—a UNESCO World Heritage Centre where history, culture, and modern comforts converge.
Imagine waking up each morning in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, surrounded by centuries of history and stunning architecture. Sounds like an absolute dream, right?
Valletta, Malta’s capital, offers this and so much more. It’s the ideal place to make your home base during a trip to Malta, with everything you need just a short walk away. While it’s a great central spot to get around the entire island (it’s the central stop for the two lines of City Sightseeing’s Hop On-Hop Off Malta Bus Tour), it’s also the perfect place to spend a few days exploring within the city limits with your Heritage Malta Pass—from breathtaking historic sites to delicious food, Valletta has it all.
Exploring Fort St. Elmo and the National War Museum
Free to enter with your Heritage Malta Pass, start your adventure with a visit to Fort St. Elmo and the National War Museum. This star-shaped fort, perched on the tip of Valletta, has stood guard over the Grand Harbour since the 16th century. Walking through its massive gates, you can almost hear the echoes of soldiers preparing for the Great Siege of 1565. With its impressive bastions and strategic location, this fortress played a crucial role in Malta’s defence against Ottoman forces, and its walls are steeped in history.
Inside Fort St. Elmo, the National War Museum offers a compelling narrative of Malta’s military history. The museum's exhibits take you on a journey from the early days of the Knights of St. John through the turbulent years of World War II. The collection includes ancient weaponry, uniforms, and wartime memorabilia, providing a vivid glimpse into the island's past. One of the museum's most prized possessions is the George Cross, awarded to the entire island of Malta for its extraordinary bravery during the relentless bombings of World War II. This honour is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Maltese people (in fact, I have my own gold filigree George Cross charm that I got from Malta during my first visit, which I wear almost every day on my necklace! It’s a smaller version of the one my nana used to wear).
Visiting Fort St. Elmo is incomplete without witnessing the daily cannon firing ceremony. Twice a day, at noon and 4:00 PM, the fort's cannons are fired in a dramatic display that echoes through the city. This tradition, which dates back to the fort's operational days, is really cool to see, transporting you back to a time when the fort's defences were paramount. Watching the cannon firing is a free experience that adds an extra layer of authenticity to your visit, making you feel like you are part of Malta’s living history. Just make sure to get there about a half hour early, as it gets super crowded and, chances are, you want to secure a good spot where you have full visibility of the spectacle below.
Overall, take your time exploring the fort's ramparts, peering through the cannon openings, and soaking in the panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. Fort St. Elmo is more than just a historical site; it's a portal to Malta's storied past and a testament to the enduring legacy of the island’s defenders.
Art and History at MUŻA, the National Community Art Museum
Art lovers will love a visit to MUŻA, Malta’s National Community Art Museum, which is also free to enter with your Heritage Malta Pass. This museum is not just a repository of art, but a vibrant celebration of Malta’s cultural heritage. Housed in the historic Auberge d’Italie, a former residence for Italian knights of the Order of St. John, MUŻA itself is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. As you step inside, you are greeted by a blend of old-world charm and modern design, setting the stage for an immersive artistic experience. Honestly, the building is its own work of art—make sure you take it all in and appreciate it!
Beyond the architecture, the museum's actual collection is impressively diverse, showcasing works spanning centuries and styles. From medieval religious icons that reflect Malta's deep-rooted Christian traditions to contemporary pieces that push the boundaries of modern art, MUŻA offers a comprehensive look at the island’s artistic journey. Among the highlights are stunning altarpieces, intricate sculptures, and vibrant paintings by renowned Maltese artists such as Giuseppe Calì and Antonio Sciortino. International pieces also find a home here, providing context and contrast to the local works.
The museum also engages visitors with interactive exhibits and educational programs, making it a dynamic space for all ages, from young children to older seniors. Workshops, lectures, and guided tours are regularly held to deepen your understanding of the art and history on display; thus, whether you’re a seasoned art aficionado or a curious traveller, MUŻA provides an enriching experience that stays with you long after you leave.
But the museum’s appeal goes beyond its visual art. For those seeking an added thrill, the museum offers a unique experience through its Underground Valletta Tour through Heritage Malta, which departs from MUŻA. This pre-booked tour takes you beneath the museum to explore a network of secret tunnels and chambers that tell their own stories of Malta’s storied past. These hidden spaces were used for various purposes over the centuries, including storage, refuge, and even clandestine activities during wartime, including protecting the population of Valletta. During this later period, they moved underground into a dense network of shelters that expanded on existing tunnels and cisterns to shield people from certain death during the Second World War. Walking through these underground passages, you can almost feel the weight of history around you, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue to your visit.
In addition to MUŻA’s indoor exhibits, the museum's location in the heart of Valletta makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the city’s artistic and cultural landmarks. After your visit, dine in the MUŻA Restaurant, located within the museum's gorgeous inner courtyard, before taking a leisurely stroll through the nearby streets, where you'll find charming galleries, artisan shops, and vibrant street art. MUŻA not only showcases Malta’s rich artistic heritage, but also connects you to the broader cultural tapestry of Valletta, making it a must-visit destination for any art lover.
Discovering the Grand Master’s Palace
No visit to Valletta is complete without a trip to the Grand Master’s Palace (and, no surprise here, this is also included with your Heritage Malta Pass). This iconic building, which served as the residence of the Grand Masters of the Order of St. John, is a marvel of opulence and history. Its grandeur is immediately evident from the moment you step into its magnificent courtyard, where intricate architecture and imposing statues set the stage for the wonders inside.
As you wander through the palace's grand halls and staterooms, you are transported back to a time of chivalry and ceremony…who doesn’t want to experience that? The walls are adorned with priceless tapestries, many of which depict scenes from the Great Siege of Malta, reflecting the valour and resilience of the Knights. Lavish decorations, including gilded ceilings, exquisite frescoes, and ornate chandeliers, add to the sense of splendour. It’s easy to imagine the grand ceremonies, diplomatic meetings, and opulent banquets that once took place within these walls, attended by the most powerful figures of the time, who lived in or came through the country for political purposes.
One of the most captivating parts of the palace is the Council Chamber, where the Grand Masters held important meetings. This room is particularly striking, with its rich decorations and historic significance. The Throne Room, another highlight, is where the Grand Master would receive distinguished guests. The room’s impressive scale and elaborate decorations make it a fitting setting for such high-level interactions.
The Grand Master’s Palace is also home to the Palace Armoury, one of the world's largest collections of arms and armour. This treasure trove offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the knights who once ruled Malta, which I found especially interesting. The collection includes suits of armour, swords, crossbows, and firearms, showcasing the evolution of military technology over the centuries (and, consequently, the evolution of Maltese self-defence). Each piece tells a story of valour and craftsmanship, from the ornate ceremonial armour to the practical battlefield gear; they’re meticulously preserved, allowing you to appreciate the intricate designs and the skill required to create them.
In addition to its historical and artistic treasures, the Grand Master’s Palace continues to play an important role in Maltese society to this day. It houses the Office of the President of Malta and the House of Representatives, blending its historical significance with its modern-day function. This aspect of living history adds a unique dimension to your visit, as you witness the seamless integration of Malta’s past and present. It makes sense why a visit to the Grand Master’s Palace is not just a tour; it’s an immersive experience that connects you with Malta’s rich history and the legacy of the Knights of St. John. Whether you’re an avid history buff or simply curious about catching a glimpse into the country’s colourful past, the palace offers a profound and enriching insight into the island’s storied history. Make sure to allow plenty of time to fully explore and appreciate the many layers of history and artistry this remarkable site offers.
Journeying Through the National Museum of Archaeology
For a deeper dive into Malta’s ancient past, head to the National Museum of Archaeology (my favourite museum in Malta!). Located in the stunning Auberge de Provence and boasting free entrance fee with your Heritage Malta Pass, this is a former residence of the Knights of St. John. The museum is a treasure trove of artifacts from Malta’s prehistoric period. The building itself is a marvel of Baroque architecture, with its grand staircase and beautifully decorated rooms providing a fitting backdrop for the ancient treasures within.
The museum’s collection is nothing short of extraordinary, offering a comprehensive look at Malta’s rich archaeological heritage. Among the highlights are the archaic Sleeping Lady and Venus of Malta statues, which are exquisite examples of Neolithic art. The Sleeping Lady, discovered in the Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni, is a small but intricately detailed figurine depicting a peaceful, reclining woman. This piece offers a fascinating glimpse into Malta's prehistoric inhabitants' spiritual and artistic practices. Equally captivating is the Venus of Malta, a voluptuous figurine that embodies the fertility goddesses worshipped by Malta’s early settlers. These statues are not just artistic masterpieces, but also windows into the beliefs and daily lives of the Neolithic people who created them. These figures' craftsmanship and detail are incredible, highlighting the advanced skills and cultural sophistication of Malta’s ancient civilizations.
Likewise, each exhibit in the National Museum of Archaeology tells a part of Malta’s story, from the dawn of civilization on the island to the arrival of the Phoenicians. The museum is meticulously organized, with each room dedicated to a different period or theme. As you move through the exhibits, you’ll encounter a vast array of artifacts, including pottery, tools, and jewellery, each piece adding to the narrative of Malta’s past.
One particularly fascinating exhibit is the collection of temple carvings, which showcase the intricate designs and symbols used by Malta’s Neolithic temple builders. These carvings, often depicting spirals, animals, and abstract patterns, are not only beautiful, but also offer insights into the religious and cultural practices of the time. The museum also features detailed reconstructions and interactive displays that help bring these ancient artifacts to life, making the experience both educational and engaging. As someone constantly talking about how I should have gone to school to be an archeologist, it’s no wonder I loved this place so much.
A visit to the National Museum of Archaeology is not just about viewing artifacts; it’s about connecting with the island’s ancient past and understanding the profound legacy of its early inhabitants. Whether you’re a seasoned archaeologist or a tourist keen on discovering a different side of Malta, this museum offers a fascinating journey through time that is both enlightening and inspiring. Make sure to set aside plenty of time to explore the exhibits thoroughly, as each artifact has its own unique story to tell, adding to the rich tapestry of Malta’s history.
The Culinary Adventure of Dining in Valletta
When it comes to food, Valletta does not disappoint. From traditional Maltese dishes to international cuisine, there’s something for every palate. During my visit, I admittedly indulged in McDonald’s (my North American palate was apparently being deprived—I know, I know…it’s utter blasphemy), but only because they had the McPlant burger that I had never tried before, since it isn’t available in Canada. As someone who hadn’t had a McDonald’s burger in years since becoming vegetarian, I was thrilled to find this tasty, plant-based option. Don’t worry; the junk food indulgence definitely stopped here.
Beyond fast food, Valletta obviously boasts numerous restaurants—including some that are Michelin-starred—offering everything from fresh seafood to gourmet vegetarian meals, which was great for two people with mixed diets travelling together. While quite a few restaurants didn’t advertise vegetarian set menus on their websites, a lot were happy to accommodate when I emailed them. It never hurts to reach out and ask!
All in All
Valletta is a city that caters to all, seamlessly blending the old with the new. Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or a foodie, this city has something special for you. We found ourselves returning to Valletta time and time again, always discovering new and exciting things to do, see, and eat.
