Welcome to Calabria, Italy's best-kept secret, where the beaches are so stunning they’ll make your Instagram feed look like a travel magazine. These are the places I dream about all winter long when I’m in the middle of a Toronto snowstorm, and I would happily spend all day lounging at when I finally am back in the South.

Pack your sunscreen and flip-flops, because we’re about to discover the most beautiful beaches in Calabria that you won’t want to miss.

Spiaggia il Paradiso Del Sub: One of the Best Beaches in Calabria

Tucked away in Zambrone, Spiaggia il Paradiso Del Sub is a paradise for both beach bums and underwater explorers. Beneath its tranquil, turquoise surface lies a mesmerizing underwater world teeming with vibrant marine life and intricate coral formations. Snorkellers and divers alike will find themselves captivated by the underwater spectacle.

One of the beach’s greatest charms is its secluded location. Far from the crowded tourist spots, Spiaggia il Paradiso Del Sub offers a tranquil escape where you can unwind and soak up the sun in peace. The gentle waves lapping against the shore create the perfect soundtrack for relaxation. While it’s a bit of a trek to get there (including climbing over large rocks to get to the nicest area of the beach), it’s 100% worthwhile…just wear proper shoes instead of flip-flops if you’re not very coordinated or have an unsure step.

The surrounding landscape is just as breathtaking as the beach itself. Rocky cliffs and lush greenery frame the shoreline, making it ideal for a scenic walk or a picnic with a view. Don’t forget to bring your camera because the photo opportunities here are endless!

Vibo Valentia: A Hidden Gem

Often overlooked in favour of more famous locales, the beach at Vibo Valentia is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. In fact, so many people from Vazzano go here that it’s affectionally (and, I may add, unofficially) called “Vazzano Beach.” The beach itself boasts soft, golden sands that stretch along the Tyrrhenian Sea, offering plenty of space for sunbathing or beach games. The shallow waters are perfect for a refreshing dip or a leisurely swim, or to sit along the water's edge and soak up the sun while staying cool with the rolling tide.

This beach is perfect for families, as the calm waters and gentle slope of the shoreline make it safe for kids to splash around, while nearby amenities like a snack bar and parking lot ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable day by the sea.

Beyond the beach, Vibo Valentia is rich in history and culture and is well worth exploring. Take a break from the sun to explore its charming old town, ruins, and local castle museum. Here, you’ll find a fascinating mix of Greek, Roman, and Norman influences that tell the story of this captivating region!

Tropea: The Jewel of Calabria

No list of Calabria’s best beaches would be complete without mentioning Tropea, often called the Jewel of Calabria. Tropea is famous for its dramatic cliffs that rise majestically from the azure waters below. The town is perched atop these cliffs, offering stunning panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's a sight that will take your breath away every single time.

The beach at Tropea is not just about sun and sea—it’s also a hub of vibrant culture. The nearby town is a labyrinth of narrow streets, charming shops, and delightful restaurants serving the best Calabrian cuisine. That said, you can’t go to the beaches of Tropea without walking through the town!

As the day winds down, Tropea offers one of the most spectacular sunsets you’ll ever witness. The sky transforms into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, reflecting off the water in a breathtaking display of nature’s artistry. It's the perfect end to a perfect day.

Spiaggia Formicoli: Painting the Sky Pink

If you’re looking for a beach that feels like a slice of heaven, Spiaggia Formicoli is the place to be (and it’s not far from Tropea!). Renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, the crystal-clear waters, and pristine sands make it a picture-perfect destination. The beach is a favourite among snorkellers, thanks to its rich underwater ecosystem the further you swim out. Grab your gear and dive into the calm waters to discover a kaleidoscope of colourful fish and marine plants. It’s an underwater adventure you won’t soon forget!

Spiaggia Formicoli is also a hotspot for socializing and fun. With plenty of people lounging and swimming, it’s a great place to go with friends, join a beach volleyball game, or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere. Whether travelling with a group or solo, you’ll never feel alone on this bustling beach.

Capo Vaticano: A Coastal Paradise

Capo Vaticano is a coastal paradise that rivals the best beaches in the Mediterranean. The waters at Capo Vaticano are some of the clearest you’ll find anywhere; the shades of blue and green are so vivid, they almost seem unreal. Whether swimming, snorkelling, or just floating on the surface in the middle of a grotto, you’ll be enchanted by the clarity and beauty of the sea.

The beach is backed by towering cliffs and lush vegetation, creating a stunning natural backdrop. The contrast between the rugged cliffs and the serene waters is a sight to behold and a photographer’s dream come true. The secluded coves and intimate beaches make it the perfect destination for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy quality time together.

Scilla: Myth and Magic

Last but certainly not least, we have Scilla, a beach steeped in myth and magic. According to legend, Scilla was the home of the mythical Greek sea monster Scylla; while you’re unlikely to encounter any mythical creatures in person while visiting, the beach does have a certain magical charm that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook.

The waters here are incredibly clear and inviting, perfect for a refreshing swim or a snorkelling adventure. The gentle waves and sandy bottom also make it a great spot for families and novice swimmers! The beach is framed by the picturesque village of Scilla, with its colourful houses cascading down the hillside. Wander through the narrow streets, visit the local castle, enjoy fresh seafood at a trattoria, and soak in the breathtaking views of the coastline.
